Over the past five years, many large enterprises have found themselves trapped in a paradoxical situation—desperate to harness the potential of artificial intelligence yet paralysed by an overemphasis on risk management. Much of this predicament can be traced back to the strategic frameworks championed by Big 4 consultancies, whose cautious, risk-first approach to AI has inadvertently stifled innovation and delayed progress. The Roots of the Doom Loop
Big 4 consultancies have, for years, advocated for enterprises to approach AI through a lens of risk mitigation. They’ve highlighted negative aspects, framing AI as a potential disruptor—capable of introducing bias, presenting incorrect information to customers and partners and upending traditional workflows. While these concerns are valid, these underlying risk concerns have often been over-emphasised, which can be counterproductive.
Large corporations have spent millions of dollars—and many months—developing AI risk management frameworks. Entire teams have been assembled to evaluate ethical concerns, regulatory compliance, and theoretical downsides of AI implementation. Though well-meaning, these initiatives have shifted organisations’ collective mindset toward fearing AI, rather than embracing its transformative potential. While this can create some value, these additional licenses often fail to create the desired business/user impact.
